Gucci has built a reputation for putting out excellent collaborations. It knows what the people want. Alessandro Michele's reign at the Florentine brand saw the label send a limited edition Adidas collection down the catwalk. There was that The North Face collaboration. Mega stuff for campers, editors and hypebeasts alike. Then there was a collection with Harry Styles. Because, who wouldn't want to dress like the Grammy Award-winning ‘As It Was’ singer?

Now, it looks like Gucci has got another collab on the way. And it's gonna be a goodie. Maybe the best yet. Definitely one for people who like comfort to fawn over. Yep, it's looking very likely that Gucci has a Birkenstock collaboration on the way. 

The prospective collaboration has been teased by none other than Sarah Jessica Parker. The actor is currently filming scenes for the upcoming second series of And Just Like That and she was snapped by paparazzi in a pair of never-before-seen Gucci Birks. A touch! Hardly surprising though. Both SJP and her on-screen journo counterpart are respected as some of the most in-the-know fashionistas out there. Both SJP and Carrie get fashion. And they get it first, seemingly. 

The collaboration (disclaimer: it hasn't been announced by either party yet) takes the form of Birkenstock's signature Boston clog, and comes with an all-over GG monogram print. Sure, not entirely inventive, but you just know that it's going to fly off shelves. 

It wouldn't be the first time Birkenstock has tapped a luxury brand. In 2021 it partnered with Dior on a collection of sling-backs and mules. The German brand has also worked with Daniel Arsham on a line of limited edition footwear, while Valentino slapped its VLTN logo onto a pair of black leather sandals. Manolo Blahnik dipped its toe in the Birkenstock collab cauldron, while Proenza Schouler got its moment two years ago.

Meanwhile, for Gucci, it's a marketing move. Birkenstock's Boston clog, as revealed by global search platform Lyst, was one of the hottest products in the world in the final quarter of 2022. A Gucci take on the slip-ons? Mega stuff!

JIL SANDER'S NON-BIRKENSTOCK CLOGS STORE ARE ACCEPTABLE MULE-TINY

Okay, bear with me: Mule-tiny. Mutiny + mule. A reach? Perhaps. But it's as funny a way to describe Jil Sander's new clog shoes as I can muster, given that they'll never quite fill the whole in my heart left by Jil Sander's exquisite Birkenstock collaboration from 2021.

After all, why would Jil Sander forsake Birkenstock for its own in-house clogs, revealed in the luxury label's new Pre-Fall 2023 campaign?

Well, actually, there's a particularly good reason.

In case you forgot, Jil Sander didn't actually collaborate with Birkenstock: it was Jil Sander+, the streamlined core collection that exists alongside mainline Jil Sander.

Jil Sander+ is apparently the preferred collaborative outlet of Luke and Lucie Meier, Jil Sander's creative directors, having overseen the brand's Arc'teryx collaboration, its second big team-up of 2021.

Both collaborations yielded unique gear far more indulgent than most of the fare informing each heritage partner's inline collection, bringing them deep into Jil Sander's world for a special one-off.

So, clearly, Jil Sander itself doesn't really do collaborations. Even a second Birkenstock partnership would be part of Jil Sander+ (make that happen, BTW).

On top of that, who knows how much creative liberties Jil Sander would opt to take with Birkenstock's inimitable designs and then there's the issue of production, revenue, retailers, all that jazz.

Now, don't get me wrong: I'm as a big a Birkenstock fan as they come. I've written about seasonal shoes, niche models, and even gone in-depth on collabs, 'cuz I care!

But Jil Sander's fancy leather clogs are an acceptable mule-tiny (sorry). Birkenstock or not, I'll never complain about bringing more easy, backless footwear into the world.

That being said, even if these come in men's sizes, it'll be hard to justify slipping into Jil Sander's shoes over the ol' Birkenstock standby.
